Natural History
As well as all the physical history of witton, there is also a cacophonous wealth of plant and animal life in this area. The fauna (and flora) comprises both native and introduced species - many of which were afforded the dubious “protection” of gamekeepers in the Fieldens’ time.
A variety of habitats are situated in the Darwen valley, which in this area formerly was the possession of the Feilden family.
These include both coniferous and deciduous woodlands, both in the valley and atop Billinge Hill, the Yellow Hills and at Alum Scar and the Stanworth Valley; wetland areas (besides the rivers and countless streams and brooks, myriad pools can be found situated around here) and pastoral arable grasslands - the fields and meadows around the farms.
Many flowers and (in season) florid fungi grow in the area, to compliment the many grasses and animal species native here. So many birds are around in summer - truly a beautiful spectacle to share with a loved one, or your family.
Many exciting and interesting walks abound (as seen in another part of this site) - fun for a summer’s day.
