Walks In Witon Country Park
There is a choice between walking through the wooded heights of Billinge Woods and descending through Witton country park into the valley of the River Darwen or a brief stroll across the so called yellow hills (The name comes from their profusion of gorse bushes) along the top to Black Hills Delf ,Yellow Hills Delf or Butler’s Delf.
Within the country park there are plenty of other walks to be taken also, like a nice brisk walk through the Pleasington nature reserve up to the butterfly garden which has been newly restored and is very peaceful and relaxing on a nice summer’s day, or a stroll around the lily pond which is equally as beautiful.
Note: the Pleasington nature reserve was opened by Processor David Bellamy himself, in August 1987 some 26 years ago.
The nature trail is another excellent, wonderful walk. Through the wooded glen of Pleasington Old Hall, whose sylvian mysteries hide much of the outside world, many species of plant, animal and fungus can be seen here in season. The ruins of the hall, now merely represented by humble walls, contains many different flowers, attracting butterflies in summer. For such a small area, this is divested with a great deal of interest and wonder.
